The Invitation of Faith ... COME!
/Come, what a beautiful word.
Children love it. Faces light up and bodies move. The aged long for it, sadly often waiting vain. All of us anticipate it – will we hear it or not?
What is it about this four-letter word that is so attractive? Come means there’s an invitation. And who doesn’t want to be invited? Come means we are not alone. There is companionship and conversation available. . . and possibly other marvelous things.
When this wonderful word is spoken from the mouth of God, our Creator and Savior and the Lover of our Souls, we certainly want to listen and respond. And I’m glad to say, God invites us, “Come to Me” time after time.
The invitation is recorded all over the Scriptures. And it comes in different forms, synonyms, metaphors. And all the time asking for the movement of our inner person the Bible calls faith, trust, belief.
First, there’s the invitation to believe in God the Creator of all there is. Then the call comes for us to trust in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who died in our place to pay for our sin. After He rose from the grave and ascended to the right hand of God, He sent the Holy Spirit into our hearts to infuse us with His life.
As we walk on this earth as His new creations, we experience Him living in and through us as us, the unique creation of God, right here and now. And that’s when we begin to realize that God is constantly inviting us to experience Him in our every day. In fact, every situation in our lives is a fresh opportunity for us to respond to His invitation to experience His presence and His power.
And the amazing thing is that our God loves the word Come also, especially when we call it out to Him. Why? Because He loves to be invited into our stuff. And maybe He at times actually waits to be invited. That’s one of the mysteries for us to find out in heaven.
So listen for His loving call to come … day after day … just as you are … for whatever you need … at anytime at all.
And then why not call upon Him to come … day after day … mess after mess … stress after stress … even joy after joy … no matter the day or time. And that is actually what we call “prayer.”
Just come!
“Come to Me,” Jesus says.
“Yes, I come, my Lord Jesus!”
And I in turn say, “Come, Lord Jesus!”
And HE comes … every time.
Thank you, Lord.
