Jesus, Joy of the Highest Heaven (A Children's Carol)
/First posted December 20, 2017:
There's a song that's been going through my mind and heart these Advent days. I even find myself bursting into a line of lyric here and there. The thoughts I love most in it are truths that have become more and more precious to me as I reflect Advent after Advent -- that our Emmanuel came to earth from heaven, not just to pay for our sins (as crucial as that is), but also to give us His divine eternal LIFE...deity indwelling our humanity. We can become children of Almighty God!!!
When I researched the background of "my" song, I discovered that it's a children's carol. How appropriate! Children's Carol...children of God!
This is what I learned...briefly stated,
Keith Getty wrote the melody of this carol for his wife Kristyn when she was pregnant with their first daughter Eliza. Kristyn then wrote the lyrics as a simple carol for children to sing about how Christ took on humanity so that we could become children of God.
Amen!
Why not sing along with me...and rest in the child-ness of who you are because of our Emmanuel Jesus, Joy of heaven...and earth!
Jesus, Joy of the Highest Heaven
Jesus, joy of the highest heaven,
Born as a little baby
Under a wondrous star.
Like us, crying He takes His first breath
Held by His mother, helpless
Close to her beating heart.
Jesus, laid in a lowly manger,
Facing a world of dangers,
Come to turn me a stranger
Into a child of God.
Jesus, King of the highest heaven
Learning to take His first steps,
That He might bring us life.
Like us, knowing our smiles and sorrows,
He showed the way to follow,
A way that is true and right.
Jesus, take away every darkness,
Steady my simple footsteps
That I might in your goodness
Live as a child of God.
